How a Notched Inner Cover is Used & Works

Inner covers are used in colder climates and seasons. We use our inner covers in fall & winter and top screens in spring & summer. Notched inner covers provide for better ventilation than flat panel inner covers. Air circulates from the hive entrance and/or bottom screen and exits through the inner cover's notch. This creates a chimney effect. Minor air flow during the winter can be beneficial to the colony in the winter to decrease condensation which can be fatal to colonies if the condensation forms on inner covers or other equipment above the winter cluster and falls back down on the cluster.
